Chapter 10: Endurance
Here again, the narrative is a consensus view based on a review of the available accounts. There were discrepancies, of course. Some airmen said they spent two weeks in the Rock Pile, whereas others said four weeks, and some said eight weeks without shoes, whereas others said three weeks. Where one mentioned incidents A and C and E, another might mention B and E, and a third C and F. And in some cases an incident was reported, but without any contextual details. Examples include the group visit to the pathology lab, described in 168 Jump Into Hell, Fred's appendicitis attack, and his nightmare at the crematorium. To include these accounts, I created a plausible explanation of how the airmen found themselves in those situations.
