Chapter 17: The Long Way Home

There is no paper trail on Fred's AWOL adventures, fortunately for Fred. I have a couple of fuzzy B&W photos he took in Paris, and I had conversations with survivors of the war in Hacqueville in 1998. Fred was warmly remembered as the only airmen who returned to see how everyone was doing right after the war ended. My mother received a medal in the town square with an honor guard consisting of the town firemen in full uniform (it's still a small town). They take good care of the church, which has a plaque in memory of the airmen sheltered there.

Fred's family learns that he has been liberated
